Can Insulating materials be sintered by the SPS ?
Yes they can be. Oxide ceramics, carbide ceramics and nitride ceramics are examples of materials that can be sintered by the SPS.
What is the material of the die used for SPS sintering
Generally the die is made of graphite. But the die can be also made of other type materials such as c/c composite, hot work steel and cemented carbide.
Can porous compounds sintered by the SPS
The pore size depends on the starting powder size and on the sintering conditions. With SPS, the porosity can be controlled to a certain limit. But to achieve a desired porosity, fillers should be mixed with the starting powder in order to control pore size and structure.
What is the sintering atmosphere ?
Normally vacuum. The pressure inside the sintering chamber is several Pa. The sintering can be performed in a neutral atmosphere such as Argon or nitrogen. Sintering in Air is also possible. But in air, the sintering temperature is recommended not to exceed 400Ž.
How is the sintering temperature measured during sintering ?

Below 1000Ž, a cis-type of thermocouple in inserted in a hole digged at the surface of the die for the temperature measuring purpose.

For temperatures higher than 1000Ž, an infrared radiation thermometer is used to measure the temperature through a glass window designed on the Vacuum chamber for this purpose too.
How can the sintering be controlled ?
With increasing the sintering temperature, the body being sintered starts to shrink. In order to keep the pressure being applied on the body being sintered, electrodes are displaced automatically to remidy the shrinkage quantity occured along the electrode axis. This displacement is instantenously monitered and displayed as well as the sintering temperature. The end of the body shrinkage expressed by an end in the electrodes displacement might be a sign for the end of the sintering process.

What are the charges for a sinteing test ?

Charges vary from a machine to another. They are fixed based on one day work ( the equivalent of 8 hours work).
The die and necessary parts for sintering are separetely charged.

Please note that the sintering time depends on the type of the sample to be sintered, its size and on the sintering cycle. Please consult us before to decide.
Is it possible to observe the sintering test ?
Yes, we do accept our customer to observe all the steps of a sintering test requested by the customer himself. The sintering test is performed at our plant in Nagaoka city or at that in Kyoto city depending on our customer request.
Is possible to perform several tens of testing samples per month ?
The sample to be sintered should be investigated before to decide. So, please consult us first.
What is the lead time for sample testing ?
If the sample testing can be performed with a standard die that we hold at our plants(φ5-30), a lead time of between 2-4weeks and more lead time time for other type of dies.
